How To: Stay Motivated

We’ve all been there, you’ve lost your mojo for training, it makes you feel great, look great; you know you should get back to eating well and exercising often.... but you just can’t get that 'get up and go' mindset back.

It's a given that we've all heard, or even said something along the lines of;

"I’m tired."

"I don't feel well."

"I don't feel like it today."

"I'll start tomorrow."

The excuses and mental barriers will come in all different forms; making you feel self-conscious and playing to your insecurities. When in reality, OK you’ve put some weight back on, or lost a little strength; you’ve been ill, inconsistent, or just . not . feeling it.

What matters is where you go from there.

When exercise is a part of your life, there will be times when a week, two weeks, a month, maybe even longer will pass, you might not be ‘feeling it’ and you know what?

That’s OK.

You’re allowed to feel down from time to time, or be demotivated. You’re human!

The truth is, no matter who you are, from top athletes, to the average Joe, we all experience times when we feel like this.

I'm going to share with you my top 5 tips to get motivated.

Lets get back to losing that weight again, building your strength, hitting those new PB’s and staying CONSISTENT!

1. Stop beating yourself up.

The longer you allow those negative thoughts to control your mind, the longer you will spend feeling demotivated.

Look upwards not down, force a smile on your face, watch a funny film or chat with someone who makes you laugh.

Scientists have discovered that when we do these 3 simple things, our brain produces Serotonin the hormone that makes us feel happy.

HINT - Exercise also does the same :)

2. Remember why you started.

Get a pen and paper and write down why you started your fitness journey.

What made you get up and say ‘Hey, we need to do something, now.’

If you have a ‘before’ picture get it back out, put it on your fridge, or laptop, or whatever you look at most each day.

Take a new picture if you need to a ‘during’ if you will, remind yourself of how far you have come.

Do not give up! Becoming healthier and fitter isn’t about the end result, it’s about what you learn on your journey.

3. Motivate yourself as soon as you wake up

The first 20 minutes after you wake up manifest the tone your day, if you read/watch negative news, it will start you off on a negative.

If this is something you currently do switch it! Instead hop on Youtube, type in motivational videos, pop your head phones in and just listen, take in what they're saying. Apply it to your own situation and it can be a great tool to build you up and get you in the right mindset to conquer the world!

If you can listen to them while you’re exercising too even better!

4. Refine your goals

Sometimes we are too impatient, we give ourselves unrealistic expectations like dropping a large amount of weight in a matter of weeks.

Anything is possible but you have to be real with yourself, how committed are you to making it your number one priority?

If you aren’t seeing the results you’d hoped for, grab a pen and paper and ask yourself these questions.

- What do I want to achieve?

- When will I achieve this?

- Why is it important to me?

- How can I break down my overall goal into smaller, manageable targets?

- Am I committed to achieving my goal?

- Have I been disciplined with my diet and nutrition?

- Have I trained with enough intensity during my workouts?

Redefining your goal is not you giving up, it’s looking at how you can make a task feel more POSSIBLE and SUSTAINABLE.

5. Be persistent and consistent

When you start a journey of self-improvement, no matter what type, you have to create new habits and kick the old ones. If you don’t work on them daily, it’s all too easy for the old ones to creep back in and return to the past version of you.

You are living in the present and looking to the future!

If you get sick, injured, or just lazy keep PUSHING yourself to eat healthy, nutritious foods. Your mind may tell you, your body wants junk food, but what your body really needs is nourishment to heal!

By keeping your diet on track, you'll have less to get back into!

What better way to re-motivate yourself than with some new activewear!
